The sobering fact is that only about 0.007% of all water on earth (and less than 1% of the worldâ€™s fresh water) is accessible for direct human use.

To exacerbate the problem, this fresh water is not evenly available to the population. The average person living in a slum in a developing country uses in a whole day about the same amount of water that an American uses taking a five-minute shower. Nearly one billion people of the world do not have access to safe water. Those 884 million amount to approximately one in eight people. Also 2.5 billion do not have improved sanitation, meaning they do not have a means to separate drinking water from waste water.

Major health issues throughout the world result from a lack of sanitary drinking water. One estimate is that half of all those in hospital beds at any one time are there because of a water related disease. This results in one child dying from a water-related disease, usually from diarrhea, every 15-20 seconds. That adds up to a staggering 1.4 million children each year. Here is another question: if chlorine will kill fish, can it be healthy for people? The Silent Threat of Chromium Compound Toxicity in Our Water

Most people think of chromium or chrome in connection with car bumpers. However, though most of this chromium has been replaced with veneer, the metal is still used in manufacturing and can be dangerous when ingested in excessive amounts.

Chromium can have a valance of anywhere from -2 to +6 which means it combines easily with other elements. However, it usually combines with a valance of either +3 (as in CrCl3) or +6 (as in K2Cr04). The valance of an ion determines how it will combine with other elements and thus what compounds are formed.

Chromium has been used in manufacturing in a variety of ways. For example, it is used in the manufacture of catalysts, paints, fungicides, glass, and ceramics, in leather tanning, in photography, and in chrome plating. For years lead chromate (PbCrO4) was used on school buses because the color was bright and did not fade in the sun. However, when the information below was discovered, the paint was replaced with other pigments.

Chromium enters our air as aerosols but precipitation removes most of it. Rain contains only a trace- generally less than a microgram- of chrome per liter. However, water is a different story. Note this: surface water may contain two micrograms of chromium per liter. Groundwater is generally less than 1 microgram/liter. But water supplies near manufacturing plants often contain 40-80 micrograms/liter. Though we take in the most chromium compounds through the food we eat, nearly10% can be ingested through our water supplies.

Chromium is certainly not all bad. In fact, Chromium (III) is important to our bodies to help us use sugar, protein, and fat. The minimum daily requirement for adults is set at 50–200 µg of chromium (III). If we don’t get that amount, it may result in weight loss or decreased growth, improper function of the nervous system, and a diabetic-like condition. For this reason, chromium (III) compounds have been used as dietary supplements and benefit us when taken moderately. Excessive amounts even of helpful chromium (III), can harm the body.

On the other hand, other forms of chromium, especially chromium (VI) can be toxic. “Calcium chromate, chromium trioxide, lead chromate, strontium chromate, and zinc chromate are known human carcinogens. An increase in the incidence of lung cancer has been observed among workers in industries that produce chromate and manufacture pigments containing chromate.”

Here are some other problems related to excessive intake of chromium: liver problems (elevated hepatic enzymes), renal failure (kidney failure), hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low blood platelets), changes in thought processes, chest pain, gastrointestinal disorders, erythema/flushing/rash, headache, dizziness, agitation, and rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of muscle fibers that can lead to kidney damage).

Chromium, like other heavy metals, may have other negative effects we do not yet know about. How much chromium VI are you ingesting daily? I checked our city water quality report and found no mention of chromium. Hopefully it is at a safe level. Just to be sure, our family purchased an activated charcoal filter for our cooking and drinking water.

Twenty-one hundred - that is the number of contaminants identified in drinking water thus far. It's frightening and, though Americans have greatly improved in cleaning up rivers and lakes, we are still leeching chemicals into the water sources that are causing health issues.

Many reading this will have acted on these warnings and stopped drinking faucet or well water. For you only filtered water is worthy of your family or yourself. That means you are either purchasing bottled water, or that you have bought a water filter and are purifying it yourself.

The problem is, when you go on vacation or on a camping trip, you don't want to trust the water supplies available to have the same healthy water you enjoy at home. If you are purchasing bottled water, then you'll take along a case or two. This option will probably provide you with safe water, but it is the most expensive. Over eight billion gallons of filtered water are sold annually at prices at times exceeding gasoline. Bottled water may not be as pure is the label indicates but it would be fine for camping. However, keep in mind that if you discard the plastic bottles you use on your vacation, you only add to the environmental problem of plastics that could sit in land fills for centuries.

Some of you have purchased a gravity feed filter. In the long run, you will save money over purchasing bottled water. If you have room, why not pack your water filter in the car and filter all drinking and cooking water on your vacation? This would provide all the water you need and would guarantee it to be as pure as you get at home. Neither will you have the problem of discarding bottles.

If you either have a built in filter, or can't pack your gravity fed water filter, then what do you do? A good option is for you to plan ahead. Filter more water than you need now and store the extra to take with you on vacation.

But in what should you store and transport it? The water is clean but you certainly don't want to jeopardize your family's health by storing it in unsafe containers. Perhaps you have heard the recent plastics warnings. The PET bottles (made of polyethylene terephthalate) used by most bottled water companies, are safe enough as long as they are not reused. However, if you store water in them where it is warm, plastics can contaminate the water over time.

Another option is to store your filtered water in the hard plastic bottles used for water coolers, or the smaller ones used for sports drinks. They look safe but the National Institutes of Health recently tested bisphenol used to make these bottles, and found it caused neurological problems in babies before birth. The long range effect on others is still the subject of further study. So that option may be out of the picture for you.

This narrows our choices even more. We want the pure water from home but can't bring the filter. If we transport it, we are in danger of ingesting substances leeched into the water from the containers that may harm us or our families. Solution- filter extra water at home prior to the vacation and store it in glass containers. This would include jars, bottles, and glass lined thermoses.

This solution answers several problems. First we won’t have the discarded bottle problem, nor the plastic leeching problem of those bottles. We will have the save clean water we filter at home, and when the bottles are empty, they can be washed and reused without danger. The resulting peace of mind will only add to the enjoyment of your vacation.

How Do You Know You Are Dehydrated?

Life depends on water. Our body weight is 75% water and our brains are 85% water that helps cushion the brain from the skull. Our cells are 75% to 90% water. We can’t live without good old H2O. There are several reasons why this is true.

First, water is called the universal solvent and most of the body’s chemical reactions take place in solution. Second, water permits blood to flow through the arteries and veins. It keeps blood runny. Third, water is an excellent absorber of heat and this fact helps regulate body temperature both by storing heat when cold and by losing heat through evaporation (sweating) when hot. Sweating has the added benefit of helping to cleanse impurities and waste from the cells.

Though we need water, we are also constantly losing it. We lose water from our bodies three ways. First, we lose water when we pass urine. Though most of the 45 to 50 gallons of fluid the kidneys process each day is returned to the body, the kidneys still produce more than a quart of urine per day. Urine is 95% water, and this quart must be replaced. The body also loses water by defecation and by perspiration.

As we said, this loss of water demands to be replaced. The average person should drink eight to ten glasses (two quarts) of water each day. If we neglect this, we will soon become dehydrated. Some have estimated that as much as 75% of Americans are dehydrated. A person who experiences these symptoms should quickly deal with dehydration for it can be fatal.

Diarrhea and/or vomiting are common causes of dehydration. During such times we may not be able to keep anything down. However, as soon as you can, ingest liquids to replace the loss. The most vulnerable are the young and old. The old are vulnerable because they tend to lose their sensation of thirst with age. A lost of more than 1% of body weight is considered severe dehydration.

What are the indications of being dehydrated? The first clear sign is production of only small amounts of dark urine. A person who is dehydrated might also notice their body temperature rise. They might also experience extreme thirst, fatigue, headaches, nausea, and confusion. A person may also have a lack of tears or sunken eyes.

If you suspect you are dehydrated, try this simple test. Pinch your skin, then let go. It should return to normal position quickly if you are not dehydrated. If in doubt, drink a glass of water. Sufficient pure water also benefits people because such rarely develop kidney stones.

Low blood pressure, convulsions, loss of consciousness, inelasticity of the skin, severe cramping of the arms, legs, stomach, and back, heart failure, sunken eyes, and deep, rapid breathing are all evidence of severe dehydration. In such cases, not only the water needs to be replaced, but also the salt and glucose.

Of course, we must be drinking clear water. Make sure it is pure and don’t necessarily trust the faucet. In summary, be sure you are drinking sufficient pure water each day. Two quarts a day can do a lot in keeping the doctor away.
